Abstract:
Hydrology (lines) within the "Huasteca Potosina Study Area"; that is, nine communities in the state of San Luis Potosí, Mexico (La Lima, La Pila, Chuchupe, Las Armas, Cuatlamayán, Santa Cruz, Tancuime, Tazáquil, and Chimalaco) and their immediate surrounding areas. Data is from two sources: 1. INEGI digital data layers from 1:50,000-scale maps (extensive technical and methodological information concerning INEGI geographic data is available at <https:///www.inegi.gob.mx>); 2. Data collected by the Mexico Indigena Team and local community investigators during the participatory research project (also called "Mexican Open Source GIS (MOS-GIS) Project"), 2005-2006, via sketch maps, interviews, and GPS site visits. See "atrib_huasteca_mi.txt" for attribute code definitions.

Features not derived from INEGI data, and features from INEGI data whose position or attributes have been altered, were constructed by local community investigators in conjunction with "Mexico Indigena" technical staff. Where "MI" appears in the "Source" attribute field by itself, both the location and name of the feature were obtained through participatory field research. In virtually all cases, "INEGI_MI" indicates that the location is derived from INEGI, but that the toponym was obtained through participatory mapping. The participatory mapping field work included two tasks: (i) the GPS locating and identification of some features by a local community investigator in collaboration with an RRT technical staff member, and (ii) mapping features through the combined use of sketch maps and interviews during a community meetings facilitated by MI technical staff. During lab work, MI staff transferred the most reliable data to this shapefile in ArcMap, using the GPS points and georeferenced sketch maps as guides. Features in the study area derived from INEGI topographic maps that were found to be incorrect were moved or deleted as appropriate.
